This place-based project focuses on the vocabulary used by outrigger canoe paddlers who speak English and Hawaiian, Palauan, or Woleaian. Project goals include training language consultants and creating materials in order to support revitalization of these languages. 

This project began in Dr. Bradley McDonnell's 2021-2022 fieldwork courses at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, working with Woleaian language consultant Mr. Lenny Saumar and colleagues on a grammar sketch and corpus. I worked with Lenny on a study of Woleaian orthographies. And I've been working with Mr. Dominic Taruwemai Jr. on an extensive study of Woleaian watercraft, marine ecology and cultural practices, with a forthcoming dictionary and paper. Project goals include training language consultants and creating materials in order to support revitalization of these languages. 

In 2022-2023 Dr. James "Woody" Woodward, who previously documented HCMCSL from Deaf signers in Vietnam, supervised a group of us students in analyzing signs for morphosyntax, then transcribing and 'alphabetizing' dictionary entries. The draft manuscript is awaiting community review; however, the project is on hiatus due to regional instability.
